Rainfall observations

Resin and drainage questions: observations before advice

A short rainfall log and a clear frontage sketch can make a later conversation clearer, but they cannot replace advice for one address.

Why a general rule is not enough

Rainfall behaves differently from one frontage to another. A web page cannot see hidden connections, neighbouring land, the fall beside a wall or what happens beyond a boundary. A material name or a single image cannot answer the question for one address.

Build a rainfall log

Walk the area safely and note what happens without digging, blocking outlets or changing the flow. Use the same viewpoints each time so the notes describe events rather than guesses.

  • Mark the door line, downpipes, gullies, kerbs, gates and neighbouring ground.
  • Note where drops appear to gather, cross or leave the frontage after rain.
  • Take one wide view and close views of low points, channels and boundary lines.
  • Record the date, weather and any earlier alteration that is known.

Keep the log factual

Write what happened, when it was noticed and what weather preceded it. Do not label the finish or diagnose flooding from appearance alone.

Sort the enquiry into topics

Separate the questions so each one can reach the right source:

  • What can be confirmed from the frontage log and what needs a visit?
  • Which current local requirements should be checked before work is planned?
  • Who should comment on the route taken by rainwater?
  • Which product information describes the proposed material?
  • Which items belong in the contractor’s inclusions and exclusions?

Choose the source carefully

Ask the council about local requirements, the relevant water or drainage body about its remit, the manufacturer about product information and a suitably qualified professional about design questions. A contractor can describe proposed work but cannot answer every external question.

Prepare a clear enquiry pack

Send the frontage sketch, rainfall log, close views, approximate dimensions and access notes. Mark facts separately from questions and ask the reply to identify anything still awaiting confirmation.

Questions for a reply

  • Which parts of the proposal are described, and which remain provisional?
  • What information supports the suggested route for rainwater?
  • Who should confirm an outstanding external point?
  • What is included, excluded or dependent on another decision?
  • How will changes to the proposal be recorded?

Do not treat a label as an answer

Words used in product descriptions do not by themselves settle the position for a particular address. Check current local information and obtain advice that matches the site where necessary.
